Description:
This great, tough and lovable Landcruiser runs and drives, but it has a
cracked block. There is no water in the oil—the crack is in the water
jacket. It has a fresh valve grind on a reconditioned head with the original
2F 6-cylinder, a rebuilt 3-speed tranny, a replaced transfer case,
reconditioned brake booster, new shocks, steering dampener, and really too
many new and reconditioned parts to mention (see list below). It has sat for
a while and has some rust. Doors are solid as is the FJ55! I love this rig
but I don't have the time to resurrect it. Over $5000 invested.
Let’s talk about practicality. I drove the cruiser to work five days a week
for a long time (2 ½ years) and not once did the motor let me down. Gas
mileage, however, is not terribly good. The rig gets 10-15 m.p.g, mileage
being dependent upon the terrain, and the speed of travel. I recently
rebuilt the carburetor, but I am no wizard at adjustment so it needs some
help. The carb is a Rochester and the linkage was customized, prior to my
ownership, so I had to rig the accelerator cable and it is funky. If you
know how to tinker with carbs you’ll be able to dial it in. As far as taking
it into the hills, I have never driven a tougher rig off-road. Ask anyone in
the business and they’ll tell you the same. I put a nice set of Cooper
Discovery All Terrain tires on it and they handle nice.
The steering has deteriorated in recent years. I rebuilt the center arm, or
drag link as it is also known, and that tightened things up quite a bit. I
learned of a relatively simple repair that will make the steering much
tighter. The whole front end is new, save one steering link end that is in
fine condition, new shocks, tie rod ends, center arm, steering dampener,
repacked (new) bearings; the works.
This rigs needs another radiator, either used or new, and not necessarily
for a Cruiser. Radiators can be much cheaper and just as effective if they
are aftermarket. Simply match the bolt pattern and intake hoses.
The brakes: new wheel cylinders on the front, turned drums, new shoes on the
front, new hydraulic lines, re-man master cylinder, what else…
The most important thing is the just rebuilt brake booster! Fresh. They do,
however, need to be bled badly after sitting.
Rust: The worst of it is on either of the front quarter-panels at the bottom
as you can probably see in the photos. Also starting to get a bit thin in
spots at the rear. The pan is remarkably solid and the majority of the rest
of the rust is superficial. I have a replacement fender off of a ’69 for the
wrecked (prior to my ownership) fender that looks much better.
TLC: It is a twenty-seven year old rig and it has its quirks. Currently, it
is starts right up, but the carb isn’t reliable and the idle is iffy. The
rings are worn and it takes a while to properly warm up. It recently had an
oil change and it had a dose of Duralube about 500 miles ago(and every
20,000 miles before that). Incidentally, I use only premium fuel and Castrol
GTX 10w-30.
I love this rig and it is hard for me to sell it. Again, I have more hours
than I could possibly count invested into it and over $5000. The price is
negotiable but not terribly. Enclosed is a list of new, remanufactured, and
replaced with used, parts. I have many receipts and some work orders (some
were lost during my move back to Washington). Feel free to e-mail me with
any questions, concerns, or comments.
