What is a parabolic spring?
Basically a Parabolic Spring is a spring that consists of two or more
leaves. The leaves touch only in the center, where they are fixed to the
axle and at the outer ends, where they are fixed to the vehicle. In between
those two points the leaves do not touch each other as they do with
conventional leaf springs. Each leaf represents a complete spring in it's
self and will act as such. To enable this the leaf is tapered, from the
center (thick) to the outer ends (thin). This tapering is parabolic, it
means that every centimeter (or inch) the thickness of the leaf decreases in
an amount that relates to the square function of it's length This may sound
complicated but in fact it is very simple. Every single leaf will have, more
or less, the shape of a complete multi leaf spring and thus it's capable to
cope with the same forces. This means that the ideal parabolic spring could
have only one leaf, however, this type of "mono leaf" spring will have very
limited articulation due to high internal stresses so a 2 or 3 leaf
parabolic spring can divide the stresses more evenly across the other leaves
and thus more axle movement is possible. That is why we offer 2 and 3 leaf
springs. Another reason to increase the number of leaves on a parabolic
spring is to increase the rate (load capacity). Because every leaf is one
spring we can ad or take out leaves without compromising the strength of the
leaf it self. So for example we have a 3 leaf rear spring and we add one
similar leaf the rate will go up for about 30% which means that the load
capacity increases by +/- 30% (depending on the shackle effect). Following
are the benefits of TIC Parabolic leaf springs.
- Improved flexibility HST Parabolic Springs will allow more axle movement
due to their typical characteristics and lack of interleaf friction.
- Improved stability HST Parabolic Springs have a slightly higher spring
rate and in combination with special shock absorbers it will give more
stability to the vehicle at all speeds.
- Increased load capacity HST Parabolic Springs are modular. Separate leafs
can be added, to increase load capacity, or removed, to lower the spring
rate, without compromising the structure of the spring itself.
For the 40 series Land Cruiseer we offer 2 leaf front and rear Parabolic
leaf springs in the “TIC” and “TNT (TRACK & TRAIL)” versions. Both versions
will deliver approximately 50-70mm of lift and will improve ride quality,
articulation, load capability, and handling. “TIC” springs feature high
quality european chrome vanadium steel and have met the strict TÜV
Teilegutachten requirements. These springs are painted blue. The budget
minded “TRACK & TRAIL” parabolics are made for those that are looking for an
economiical verrsion parabolic spring assembly. These are painted black.
For the 60 series we offer a 2 leaf front spring that is ideal for med-heavy
front ends, and 2,3, or 4 leaf rear springs to suit a variety of load
ranges. 2 Leaf rears are suited to light-medium loads. 3 leaf rears are
suited to vehicles that are heavyup to GVW. 4 lleaf assemblies are only for
extremely heavy constantly loaded vehicles. 60 series springs available in
TIC or TNT(TRACK&TRAIL) versions. Lifts vary but front can expect 50-75mm
depending on shackle length and vehicle weight, rears can expect 50-100mm
depending on shackles, and load. Bushings and fitting hardware sold
separately unless specified in kits.
Parabolics require use of anti-inversion shackles sold separately.
