If you've owned your FJ40 for any period of time you've
probably done some work on the front end trying to "tighten" it up. Quite a
few of our customers have replaced their ball joints, overhauled their
center arm assembly, adjusted the front wheel bearings and adjusted their
steering box but still find the amount of "slop' in the stock Toyota
Steering System unacceptable.
A very popular and proven fix for this problem is to convert to a Saginaw
Steering System. By converting to a Saginaw System you will eliminate the
stock steering box, the drag link from the steering box to the center arm,
and the center arm itself.
Two different kits are available, one for manual steering that will work
with stock engines, and winches and one for power steering that will not
work with stock engines, which takes additional horsepower to drive the
pump. The larger steering box may require the winch to be moved, special
hoses may be required for the pump, along with custom pump brackets.
Both kits include all necessary parts for the conversion except for the
steering box, power steering pump, and hoses. Kits are designed to be used
with stock steering columns only. Installation should be done by a
professional, as special welding and fabrication skills are required to
complete a strong and safe installation.
