Ranger Torque Splitter
For those of you about to undertake a V-8 conversion, the Ranger Torque
Splitter is one of the best options for adapting a V-8 into your Land
Cruiser. The beauty of the Ranger Torque splitter is that it not only
will adapt your Land Cruiser 4 or 5 speed transmission to a GM
bellhousing, eliminating the need for an adapter bellhousing, but you
get an exceptional quality overdrive(underdrive also available) in the
bargain. It will actually split, and overdrive(or underdrive) every
single gear you have both in lo and hi range. Manufactured by Advance
Adapters this unit is exceptionally strong, and features fully
synchronized shifting, heavy-duty bearings, aluminum alloy case, and a
27% overdrive(or 17% underdrive). The unit itself is designed to handle
20,000 lb. GVW trucks! This unit is the ideal adapter for installing a
V-8 into an FJ60.
The Ranger Torque Splitter is a fully functioning two-speed transmission
with a 1:1 ratio for normal situations, and a 27% overdrive when
shifted. Using a Ranger Torque Splitter with your 4 speed tranny will
give you 16 speeds forward, and 4 in reverse! The unit itself fits onto
the front of your stock 4 speed transmission replacing the bearing
retainer, and bolts directly up to a Chevy bellhousing, forming the
adapter for your V-8 conversion. This eliminates the need for a special
bellhousing, and also provides the extra length needed to properly
position the Chevy V-8 for firewall clearance, and eliminates the need
for drivetrain modifications, or relocating OEM shift levers. Use of a
Ranger Torque Splitter makes for one of the most straight forward, least
complicated conversions available, while yielding some of the most
useful gearing available.
When using this transmission you will be able to use a regular Chevy
bellhousing, with all Chevy clutch components. You will need to use
shifter bracket part no. 716287 in order to retain the Toyota slave
cylinder if so desired. On some models the slave cylinder will have to
be relocated so as to be on the left side. V-8 motor mounts, and other
parts necessary to install the V-8 will have to be purchased separately.
FJ60's can re-use the original transmission mount, pre 1980 FJ40's will
have to use a rear crossmember or 4+Plus mount for trans/transfer. The
Ranger Torque Splitter is compatible with both 4 and 5 speed Land
Cruiser manual transmissions. Parts required for basic installation of
adapting and mounting a V-8 are listed below. For help with your

The Ranger Torque Splitter can also be used with the original Land
Cruiser 6 cylinder engine, but in this configuration, drive shaft
modifications will be required, and the original shift lever holes will
have to be relocated. This conversion with the OEM 6 cylinder is best
suited to the longer wheelbase of an FJ55, or 60 series wagon. Currently
